How to run for charity

There are 2 different ways to become a charity runner in the Edinburgh Marathon Festival Virtual Challenge.

The first type is a Virtual Charity Entry where your chosen charity will cover up to the full cost of your entry and expect you to raise a minimum amount of sponsorship money in return. The second is where you purchase your Own Virtual Entry and fundraise for a charity of your choice, with no minimum sponsorship commitment:

Apply for a Charity Entry

If you would like a Virtual Charity Entry with one of our Official, Premier or Affiliate Charities, you will need to apply for a Charity Entry.

Your chosen Charity will have 21 days (or until entries close, whichever comes first) to decide whether to approve or decline your application before it expires automatically.  You cannot apply to more than one charity at a time, but if you do change your mind while awaiting approval, you can cancel your application.

How to apply:

    • Visit the page of your chosen Affiliate Charity.

    • Scroll to the Charity Entry section at the bottom of the page and choose your virtual event.

    • Complete the online application form.  If you already have a ’My Details’ account you should log in before competing the application form.  If not, you can set up an account as part of the entry process.

    • Click ’Submit’.

    • You will receive an email from the event organisers within 21 days (or before entries close, whichever comes first) to advise whether or not your application has been successful. During that time, your charity may contact you directly to discuss your application and minimum sponsorship requirements/registration fees.

Own Entry Fundraising

You are welcome to purchase your Own Virtual Entry in your chosen event distance and fundraise for any charity of your choice.

If you have purchased your Own Entry and would like to fundraise for one of our listed charities, you can log in to your My Details account after you have purchased your entry and click the link to ’choose to fundraise for an Affiliate Charity’.  We will then inform your chosen charity and they will be in touch with you directly to discuss fundraising etc.

If you have purchased your Own Virtual Entry and would like to fundraise for a charity not listed on this website, you are welcome to do so however you would need to contact the charity directly to discuss fundraising etc.

Why run for charity?

Edinburgh Marathon Festival runners have raised tens of millions of pounds for charities and great causes since it began in 2003. Hundreds of charities rely on fundraising income generated by events, but in 2020 covid-19 pandemic has meant that charities are really struggling. Each and every penny you can fundraise for a charity of your choice will make a huge difference, especially this year, especially now. Please consider using your virtual challenge to raise money for your charity and do something great for others.

When the training is getting tough and you’re wondering what you’ve got yourself into, the knowledge that you’re raising money for a cause you really believe in will give you a purpose and keep you on track until you complete your challenge!

Your chosen charity will offer you fantastic support and encouragement with both your training and fundraising for your Edinburgh Marathon Festival Virtual Challenge.

The Cause

Have you or a loved one been affected by a specific illness? Picking a cause close to your heart, gives you the drive and determination to dig in and do all your can to raise funds for that charity.

By choosing a charity to run for and asking your family and friends to support you, you will raise awareness for your charity and your cause. You never know, next year you might find you have company on the start line!

Team Work

Enhance your whole EMF experience by being part of your charity’s team, from the moment you sign up. Wear your charity vest with pride as you complete your challenge!

JustGiving make fundraising as easy as possible for you. Remember all donations from UK taxpayers are subject to Gift Aid, an extra 25p for every £1 donated!
